Darius Slay getting roasted shows Eagles made right call moving on

The Philadelphia Eagles looked like a team that was in dire need of a second outside cornerback in their season-opening win against the Dallas Cowboys, as Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb had a field day picking on starter Adoree Jackson. The decision to part ways with Darius Slay looked a bit questionable.

Slay joined the Pittsburgh Steelers with the thought that he could be the missing piece in a veteran-laden secondary, but his initial performance is making fans on the other side of Pennsylvania have some major buyer's remorse.

In the first quarter against the New York Jets, Slay gave up multiple catches to Garrett Wilson despite the fact that Justin Fields came into the game expecting to lean heavily on the ground game. Slay was also burned on a long touchdown.

Slay is being targeted by Jets OC Tanner Engstrand, which should make Eagles fans desperate to get him back a bit more hesitant about defending that position.

Eagles made right call moving off Darius Slay after tough Steelers debut

Slay graded out well in the eyes of Pro Football Focus, but cornerbacks of a certain age can often lose it immediately due to how dependent on speed and athleticism the position is. The Eagles knew that it was much better to get rid of a player like that one year early than one year late.

Slay is going to play an integral part in a Steelers secondary that is trying to chase a championship, as evidenced by the decision to trade for Jalen Ramsey without giving up Joey Porter Jr. Slay's start to life in the black and gold has started off very auspiciously, to say the least.

Slay may not get an easier matchup all season long, as the Jets may have the worst wide receiver room in the league when you remove a player like Wilson from the equation. Still, Slay is looking like a player that only has one or two more years left in the pros.

While Slay picked the Steelers with the thought that he could get one more ring on his finger before he calls it a career, he might not get the opportunity to do that if he continues to get smoked against some of the worst teams in the league.
