The Dallas Cowboys have a clear defensive issue to address following their 23-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and cornerback DaRon Bland believes third-down execution is a major part of the problem.
Dallas fell to 2-4 after struggling to consistently get off the field against Green Bay. Although the defense has shown signs of progress, its inability to finish possessions allowed the Packers to sustain drives and keep the Cowboys from gaining momentum.
Green Bay converted its first six third-down attempts and finished the game 11-for-18, repeatedly extending drives against Dallas. The Packers took advantage of those opportunities to keep the Cowboys’ defense on the field and limit its chances to end possessions.
Bland acknowledged that Dallas has performed better on first and second down but has struggled to turn those situations into stops when opponents reach third down.
“It’s about playing all four downs,” Bland said. “We’re doing good on first, and second, so we just got to get off on third down.”
The cornerback believes the issue is correctable, emphasizing that the defense must return to its fundamentals and ensure every player executes his assignment.
“That’s what we’ve got to get back to: owning our fundamentals,” Bland said.
For Bland, improving on third down requires more than one player making a big play. The entire defense must work together and carry out its responsibilities within the scheme.
“We just gotta execute,” Bland said, “We’re still allowing long drives out there. We’ve gotta get [off the field] on third down, man. It’s just execution.”
The Packers’ 11 conversions demonstrated how costly those breakdowns can be. Dallas needs to turn its early-down success into complete defensive possessions instead of allowing opponents to extend drives.
With the season still underway, Bland believes the Cowboys can address the problem by returning to the basics and improving their consistency. The challenge now is translating that message into results during upcoming games.
Dallas must regroup quickly, with the Philadelphia Eagles scheduled next for a Monday Night Football matchup. The Cowboys enter the divisional contest at 2-4, making defensive improvement especially important as they look to change the direction of their season.
Rookie pass rusher Malachi Lawrence, who made his first career NFL start against Green Bay, said the team must learn from the defeat and move forward rather than allowing it to affect the next game.
“A loss is always tough,” Lawrence said. “But you have to flush it. You can’t just dwell on a loss, because then you won’t gain anything from it.”
The Eagles will provide another test for a Dallas defense that needs to finish drives more consistently. Better third-down execution, stronger fundamentals and improved communication will be essential if the Cowboys want to prevent the same problems from carrying into another week.
