Davante Adams became one of the most coveted free agents in the market after the New York Jets agreed to release him.
Adams may be on the older end for a receiver, but he remains one of the most elite players at the position because of his crisp route running and ability to find open space. He didn’t last long in free agency as he agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams, giving head coach Sean McVay a legitimate X-receiver to pair alongside Puka Nacua.
While Nacua is projected to lead the passing game, Adams is more than capable of holding his own no matter where he lines up. The veteran is effective from the slot or lined up outside, giving McVay plenty of flexibility with his personnel groupings and play calling.
Adams got a chance to work with McVay during voluntary workouts and OTAs and noted that he’s been consistent both as a person and a coach, via The Dan Patrick Show:
“Just like everybody says. I haven’t heard anybody say anything different about McVay. I think of any coach ever spoken about to me, it’s been the most uniform feedback ever. And then I got around him and he completely validated all of it.”
Adams also discussed McVay’s infections energy and how that radiates throughout the building:
“He’s got energy, but it’s all legit. It’s real. You can feel him. You just love being around his energy. Even when you don’t do things right, you may have messed something up, you don’t feel that, like, ‘Oh, my coach is going to come down on me.’ He’s going to correct you and he’s going to hold you accountable, but it’s just a different feeling in that building right now, for sure.”
For the past few years, Adams hasn’t been able to win many games due to poor coaching and quarterback play but those two areas shouldn’t be issues with McVay and Matthew Stafford on hand in L.A. Adams still has plenty left in the tank if the 2024 season is any indicator, so it’ll be exciting to see what he can do with better infrastructure around him.
It’s been a while since the NFL’s seen the best of Davante Adams who was limited with the Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets. However, he’s only been with the Rams for a few months and admitted he’s already feeling rejuvenated.
