The No. 21 Alabama Crimson Tide experienced a challenging start to the 2025 college football season, losing to the No. 14 Florida State Seminoles by a score of 31-17.
In the game, the Crimson Tide were outmatched in the trenches. They allowed their opponents to gain 230 rushing yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. In comparison, Alabama managed only 87 rushing yards, averaging just three yards per carry. Furthermore, Florida State recorded seven tackles for loss and three sacks, while Alabama finished with three tackles for loss and one sack.
Despite their recent loss, college football analyst David Pollack stated on "See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack" that he is not ready to write off the Crimson Tide just yet.
"I wouldn't write them off yet, man," Pollack said. "There's a lot of talent on that roster. I'm not ready to do that yet."
According to 247Sports' talent composite, Alabama is ranked as the second most talented team in the country, trailing only the Georgia Bulldogs. The Crimson Tide boasts the highest number of five-star recruits on its roster, totaling 14, and ranks eighth in the country with 50 four-star prospects.
Overall, Alabama accumulated 993.85 points, which puts them closer to Georgia, ranked first with 1,002.98 points, than to the Ohio State Buckeyes, ranked third with 973.69 points.
Alabama's issue isn't a lack of talent on the roster; it's the unexpected losses in games they should be winning. Under Kalen Deboer's leadership, Alabama has a record of 9-5 in his first 14 games. In their last 10 games, the Crimson Tide have gone 5-5. Notably, four of those losses were to unranked teams, despite Alabama being favored by double digits in those matchups.
It's important to note that Florida State, currently ranked No. 19 in talent composite for this season, has faced teams with overall less talent. Last year, Alabama held the top ranking at No. 1 in talent; however, three of its losses came against teams ranked No. 7, the Oklahoma Sooners, No. 16, the Michigan Wolverines, and No. 50, the Vanderbilt Commodores.
For Pollack, Alabama’s talent remains too overwhelming to ignore. The Crimson Tide have more five-star recruits than any roster in the nation and sit just behind Georgia in overall talent rankings. But if DeBoer can’t turn talent into results, especially in games Alabama is expected to win, patience will run out quickly.
Week 2 against UL-Monroe won’t prove much, but how Alabama performs once SEC play begins will determine whether Pollack’s confidence is justified, or if the Tide’s slide has truly begun.
