Deshaun Watson involved in roster moves the Browns made right as training camp begins, one thing sticks out about what Cleveland did

Training camp has arrived around the NFL, and Wednesday marks the first time Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski will speak to the media.

Unlike the past couple of years, the Browns are not beginning training camp at The Greenbrier. Cleveland made a few roster moves ahead of camp, with one in particular standing out.

Deshaun Watson remains eligible to return for the Browns this season

Among the moves, the Browns placed Watson on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. Defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr. was also placed on the same list. Because both were designated to the active PUP list—not the reserve—they remain eligible to return.

Additionally, the Browns placed wide receiver David Bell on the Active/Non-Football Injury list and waived wide receiver Jaelen Gill due to a non-football injury.

Watson is currently recovering from an Achilles injury he re-aggravated following initial surgery. While the Browns have publicly stated they’ve accepted the trade as a fail, they are still tied to his contract. There remains a possibility that Watson could return to play at some point this season.

Cleveland has four quarterbacks on the roster: rookies Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, along with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett. The starting job will go to the best performer in camp. However, it’s likely the Browns will use multiple quarterbacks throughout the season—a pattern that has been common during Stefanski’s tenure.

The door remains open for Watson to return in 2025, and that is certainly something to monitor. The Browns will be back on the practice field this afternoon as training camp begins to ramp up.
