The Detroit Lions’ rookie class has been a major topic of discussion at training camp, as several members of the group are already making impacts and fighting for starting roles. However, one rookie who has been off to a slow start is edge rusher Derrick Moore.
Moore, the Lions’ second-round pick, missed nearly two weeks of practice and the opening preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a groin strain last week. The Michigan product returned to practice this week, looking to get back on track.
Though Moore has had an overall quiet camp so far, he finally posted a breakout day on Wednesday ahead of the second preseason contest at home against the Washington Commanders.
During Wednesday’s practice, Moore was constantly in the backfield. According to Tim Twentyman of Lions.com, the rookie edge rusher tallied two sacks in team periods, and Twentyman also noted his quick first step.
With Moore back in the lineup, the Lions’ No. 2 edge rusher battle has officially reopened. Competing with Moore is free-agent addition D.J. Wonnum, and Ahmed Hassanein should also have a case with his dominant camp and showing versus the Bengals last Thursday.
Though Moore’s injury has caused him to be behind in the race, the 23-year-old is catching up and could exponentially raise his stock this weekend. If Moore can generate consistent pressure on Commanders quarterbacks on Saturday and also make an impact in the run game, the 6-foot-3 rookie defender could establish himself as the clear-cut starter opposite Aidan Hutchinson.
Moore still has a lot of work to do as he eyes a starting job come Week 1. However, Wednesday was a fantastic step in the right direction for him, and Moore must carry this momentum to Saturday’s contest.
