Does Colts' Anthony Richardson Sr. have new team in mind amid rise of Daniel Jones?

Daniel Jones' stunning emergence as the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts could cause some outsiders to overlook 2023 first-round draft pick Anthony Richardson Sr., who is currently serving as Jones' backup.

On Wednesday, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler hinted that Richardson could be interested in learning as a backup for Los Angeles Rams starter Matthew Stafford.

Does Anthony Richardson Sr. need a reset under a top-tier head coach?

"My sense is Richardson would be open to joining a premier playcaller such as Sean McVay as a developmental player so he can reset for 2026," Fowler explained.

Richardson has not yet gone public with a trade request since losing the competition for the Indianapolis starting job to Jones in August. However, Richardson's agent attracted attention during the preseason when he said that the 23-year-old's "trust" level with the Colts was "at best, questionable."

Meanwhile, Jones won his first three starts with the Colts before a 27-20 loss to the Rams on Sunday. According to Pro Football Reference, Jones ended Week 4 ranked sixth in the NFL among qualified players with an 80.8 adjusted QBR and eighth with a 103.3 passer rating.

"If Jones keeps playing well and leads them to their first division title in more than a decade, who's to say the Colts don't decide he's their future at quarterback and sign him to an extension?" ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote for Wednesday's article.

Why Rams may take a flier on Anthony Richardson Sr.

Stafford led the Rams to three victories in September. That said, he turns 38 years old in February, and his status with the organization is on a year-by-year basis

In the offseason, the Rams considered trading Stafford to either the New York Giants or Las Vegas Raiders before he left some money on the table to stay with the NFC West side.

The Rams could allow Richardson to "reset" and grow while studying a former Super Bowl champion at least through January. In short, the Colts sending Richardson to the Rams before the Nov. 4 trade deadline could benefit every party involved.
