Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson was among New York Jets players who vented their frustrations after the club fell to 0-4 on the season via a 27-21 loss against the Miami Dolphins, who were winless heading into Monday night.
Thus, some wondered if Wilson had any regrets about accepting a four-year, $130M contract extension from the club during the offseason. While speaking with reporters on Thursday, he attempted to put that topic to bed.
"I would say that all of us in this room have had people that thought you should go about things a certain way, go do this, go chase that," Wilson explained, per Antwan Staley of the New York Daily News. "But this is about me, right? And I gotta go home at night and feel good about the decisions I make, and I love it, man. These people have bought into me since I was a college kid, not knowing, you know, what my next step was, as far as football, and the fan base has dove into me. I mean, this is where I wanna be, this is where I want to win. It’s not about just winning. It’s about where for me. It is about where you did it at, what role do you play?"
Wilson hasn't been shy about voicing his displeasure with the state of the Jets since they made him a first-round draft pick in 2022. In December 2024, he raised eyebrows when he said he felt the Jets had "a losing problem" or losing "gene." Neither he nor fellow 2022 draft choice Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner has been part of a winning NFL season.
First-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn and first-year general manager Darren Mougey have come under fire amid the club's winless start to the season. Wilson seems to have faith that those in charge are heading it in the right direction, regardless of how their September ended.
"I truly believe that because of the things that guys that have been around here have gone through, these last few years, and what we’re battling to get out of, it’ll make it that much more beautiful than stress," Wilson added during his comments. "I don’t ever lose sight of and lose faith in what AG, Mougey, the staff, and everyone, and what their plan is."
As of Friday morning, ESPN BET had the Jets as 2.5-point underdogs for Sunday's home game against the Dallas Cowboys (1-2-1). Wilson making plays against a leaky defense could propel the Jets to a much-needed victory.
