A week after Miami Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis wasn’t seen throwing during the team’s bye-week practice, the mystery surrounding his absence has finally been cleared up.

Willis was listed on Wednesday’s injury report with a thumb injury. The good news for Miami is that the 27-year-old quarterback fully participated in practice.

During practice on Oct. 13, Willis wasn’t seen throwing as the Dolphins worked through their bye week. At the time, there was no indication that he was dealing with an injury.

“[Dolphins coach Jeff Hafley] was just like all the guys that played in the game, like the older guys, he just wanted to get us a little rest,” Willis said. “And he wanted to get some young guys in there and see how they were progressing throughout the season. But pretty good.”

Willis has struggled with the Dolphins after signing a three-year deal during the offseason

Through his first five starts this season, Willis has struggled, throwing for 849 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also fumbled five times while completing just 56.2% of his passes.

During the bye, Willis said he spent time evaluating himself and the Dolphins’ offense. He watched film to see what he and the team did well and what needed improvement.

“You have to actually do your job and continue to try to get better at your job, but at the same time you got to take a deep breath and take a break,” Willis said. “That’s what it’s for.

“This is a long season and there’s a lot of ups and downs, a lot of emotions that come with it. Just try to do your best to stay centered and understand that. Take it one step at a time, one day at a time.”

For Willis, the focus now shifts from the bye-week reset to proving he can turn those words into results. With Miami at 0-5, the Dolphins’ quarterback has little room to take things one day at a time—the pressure to start winning is here. Especially against a Jets team that the Dolphins swept last season.
