Dolphins quietly elevate assistant coach to new role in continued search for offensive spark after frustrating 2024 campaign
USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins have spent a fair amount of time this offseason focused on tinkering their coaching staff.

In years past, there have been major changes to major titles. Brian Flores had four offensive line coaches and four offensive coordinators in three seasons. Mike McDaniel had three different defensive coordinators in his first three years with the franchise. With this kind of irregularity in key roles, it's been hard for Miami to establish a rhythm of scheme year over year. That's bled into player development and created additional headaches as the team has tried to hit a constantly moving target on what they're looking for in personnel.

All of that has finally calmed down. McDaniel returns Anthony Weaver as the defensive coordinator for the second straight season. But there's been plenty of tinkering elsewhere. And now it's been revealed that the Dolphins have made another subtle change to their coaching staff.

Dolphins promote Chandler Henley to run game specialist

The Miami Dolphins, according to their team webpage, have promoted offensive assistant Chandler Henley to serve as the team's run game specialist in 2025. Henley, a Yale graduate, was most recently in Atlanta as the Falcons' assistant offensive line coach in 2021 before arriving in Miami to serve as the assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022. He got his start in the NFL with the Tennessee Titans in 2018, where he served as a quality control assistant with a focus on the offensive line.

Henley has been with the Dolphins since Mike McDaniel's arrival in 2022 and now receives his second promotion in as many off-seasons — he was promoted from assistant quarterbacks coach to senior offensive assistant last offseason.

Henley's elevation pairs with the addition of Bobby Slowik this offseason to give Miami two prominent new roles on the offensive coaching staff: Henley's run game specialist and Slowik's senior pass game coordinator title give more specialization to the non-position coaches that will help McDaniel try to breathe life into his offense in 2025.
