Dolphins to Add Nickel Cornerback to Roster Soon
The Miami Dolphins have felt the effects of an injury bug that’s plagued their nickel cornerbacks this season. First off, on the opening day of training camp, veteran Artie Burns — a first-round pick back in the 2016 NFL Draft — suffered a torn ACL, and he’ll be on the shelf for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Rookie Jason Marshall Jr. then bit the dust and sustained a hamstring injury in Miami’s Week 2 loss to the New England Patriots last month. Marshall was the No. 150 overall pick in this year’s draft out of the University of Florida.
Unfortunately, Dolphins fans can now add one more player to the list of nickel cornerbacks currently on injured reserve. Head coach Mike McDaniel announced on Wednesday that Cornell Armstrong, who got injured against the Carolina Panthers a few days ago, will join Marshall and Burns on the team’s IR.
However, that wasn’t all McDaniel had to say that was notable. Reinforcements are on the way, as in addition to revealing Armstrong’s placement on the injured reserve, the Dolphins’ leader from the sidelines indicated that they will soon be signing a nickel cornerback on the open market. It’s worth noting that McDaniel didn’t disclose the identity of the cornerback, though.
Cornell Armstrong is going on IR. Dolphins will be signing a nickel cornerback.
“We will be adding a player and there will be subsequent moves throughout the week,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel.

Maybe longtime defensive stud Jimmie Ward is someone Miami should be kicking the tires on. He’s an unsigned free agent with prior experience playing the nickel cornerback spot, and he was a linchpin to the Houston Texans’ defensive unit last season. Ward started 10 games with the Texans and tallied two interceptions and 48 combined tackles.
Whoever it is that the Dolphins decide to bring on to fortify the position (whether it’s Ward or another name out of left field), with any luck, he will enjoy better injury luck than their other nickel cornerbacks have in the 2025 campaign.
