Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa Has Accuracy, But Can He Be a Difference Maker?

Miami Dolphins' quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has had an interesting five year NFL career so far. Tagovailoa was the Dolphins' fifth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, and at times he's looked like that type of quarterback. However, he's also battled injuries and played in one playoff game in his career.

But, when he's been healthy and at the top of his game, he's been one of the best passers in the NFL. Each of the last three years, under head coach Mike McDaniel, Tagovailoa has led the NFL in at least one passing category.

In 2022, Tagovailoa led the NFL in yards per attempt, yards per completion and quarterback rating, setting career-highs in all three. In 2023, the Dolphins' quarterback led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards, and last season, despite fighting injuries, Tagovailoa led the league in completion percentage.

The Athletic's Mike Sando recently compiled evaluations of all the quarterbacks in the NFL from 50 different NFL coaches and executives, and ranked them into quarterback tiers. Tagovailoa ranked in the third tier, which is the same tier he ranked in before the 2024 season.

However, one offensive coach believes Tagovailoa may be underrated, considering the Dolphins a top-10 offense when the quarterback's on the field.

"They literally cannot operate the offense when he is not out there, and then they are a top-10 offense when he is out there," an offensive coach said (h/t The Athletic). "I don't even like watching him play, but at this point, dude, I can't say you are not that guy."

That coach placed Tagovailoa in tier two, and one executive shared a similar sentiment and it's true. The Dolphins have not been able to win consistently without Tagovailoa on the field, and the offense struggles mightily.

Many of the coaches and executives agreed that Tagovailoa is great when he's in the game, healthy and playing on schedule, but if those three don't align they become worried.

The Dolphins' quarterback's accuracy is not a question. In fact, one voter said Tagovailoa is nearly "the most accurate quarterback" in the NFL. However, the accuracy diminishes if the play goes off-schedule or the Dolphins can't get a run game going.

This was something McDaniel touched on throughout the Dolphins' offseason. Not only does the run game bring a level of physicality to a football team, but it opens up passing lanes for a quarterback.

The conclusion is when the Dolphins have a productive run game, and Tagovailoa is healthy and on schedule in the passing game, he's one of the best, most accurate quarterbacks in the league. But when those don't add up, it doesn't equal a quarterback many coaches or executives are confident in to carry a team to victory.

Tagovailoa is entering his sixth year in the NFL, and him and McDaniel are under more pressure than ever to get the Dolphins back to the playoffs. Will Tagovailoa be able to be a difference maker for Miami in 2025?
