Last offseason, a lot of what Dan Quinn and Adam Peters wanted the Washington Commanders to be was a mere vision.
There was no roadmap to follow to get the franchise looking the way they wanted it, and things had to play out in real-time. But fast forward 12 months, and now both Quinn and Peters know exactly what to look for this offseason in free agency and the draft.
For Quinn, the biggest difference is he now knows what he is looking for in a "Commander" and to him, that is a crucial piece as the franchise gears up for the scouting combine in Indianapolis.
“Last year I didn't know what I didn't know about our team, and the most important thing that I know now, that's the definition of a Commander," Quinn said. “That makes this week even more purposeful in a lot of ways because now that Adam [Peters] and I aren't just picturing it, we've actually seen it and that's a really big deal. So starting this process last year, we had a hell of draft class and we're looking forward to following up on that for this year, especially now that we know who we are even more clearly, it makes this process even stronger.”
Now, Quinn and Peters know what they're looking for, and that will make the process much easier and streamlined.
Plus, it helps when you have a good quarterback in Jayden Daniels leading the way on and off the field, but the Commanders must now continue to put good pieces around him, something they did well last offseason.
And doing it again might be a little simpler for the franchise because they know the green and red flags that they are looking for in a player. Going around in their first year together, Quinn and Adams didn't have anything to fall back on regarding how they wanted the team to look and it was a hope that things would work out.
But now, they've got a full NFL season of work to look back on, and that will help them tremendously as they look to fill out the roster for 2025 and continue to build the culture of a winning organization.
