The Philadelphia Eagles have added experienced depth behind their starter, acquiring quarterback Andy Dalton from the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2027 seventh-round pick.

The move comes after the departure of Sam Howell in free agency, leaving a vacancy in Philadelphia’s quarterback room. Dalton now joins a group led by franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts and rising backup Tanner McKee.

Dalton Brings Experience in Limited Role

At 38, Dalton enters his 16th NFL season as a veteran insurance option rather than a primary backup. The former three-time Pro Bowler has amassed nearly 40,000 passing yards and 254 touchdowns over his career, which began with the Cincinnati Bengals.

He spent the last three seasons in Carolina, where he made limited appearances, including a 2025 start in which he threw for 175 yards in a loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Philadelphia is expected to retain McKee as the No. 2 quarterback, with Dalton serving as a reliable third option who can step in if needed.

Panthers Continue Roster Turnover

For Carolina, the trade represents another step in reshaping the roster. The deal frees up cap space while aligning with the team’s plan to develop younger quarterbacks behind starter Bryce Young.

The Panthers recently signed Kenny Pickett to a one-year deal, signaling a shift toward younger depth options at the position.

Low-Risk Move for a Contender

The Eagles have consistently prioritized quarterback depth during their recent run of success, and this move follows that philosophy. With Hurts firmly entrenched as the starter and McKee continuing to develop, Dalton provides experienced cover at minimal cost.

For a team with championship aspirations, adding a seasoned veteran ensures stability at one of the most critical positions without disrupting the existing hierarchy.
