Eagles beat 49ers out in trade for wide receiver

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly were interested in trading for Houston Texans' wide receiver John Metchie III, according to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz. On Sunday, Schultz posted on X, "The Texans are trading WR John Metchie III to the Eagles, per multiple sources." Schultz followed that tweet with another, which read, "Sources: The 49ers were the other team trying to trade for John Metchie III. But the Eagles made a better offer."

Metchie was drafted by the Texans in the 2nd round (44th overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, Metchie compiled 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown. The former University of Alabama wideout started three games in 2024, while appearing in 13.

The 49ers must have seen something in Metchie, who has averaged over 10 yards per reception in his short career. The Eagles see something in him, as well, and outbid the 49ers for the wide receiver. According to reports, the Eagles are receiving Metchie, while the Texans are getting TE Harrison Bryant in the trade. Additionally, the two teams will swap day-three picks.

The 49ers are thin at multiple positions, including wide receiver, which is why they were reportedly interested in Metchie. But San Francisco either wasn't able to offer as much or wasn't willing to. The 49ers will likely continue their pursuit of help for a wide receiver group that is currently without Brandon Aiyuk or Jauan Jennings. Additionally, newcomer Demarcus Robinson is facing a multiple-game suspension for a DUI.

For the Super Bowl Champion Eagles, they get to add another solid receiver to an already talented wide receiver room.
