Voluntary OTAs have come and gone for the Philadelphia Eagles as the focus shifts to mandatory minicamps.
The biggest storyline from OTAs was edge rusher Bryce Huff not showing up and then being traded to the San Francisco 49ers. Another highlight was Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio announcing rookie first-round pick Jihaad Campbell being out until mid-August.
Philadelphia still has storylines heading into minicamp that will carry over into training camp. There is one storyline that will demand everyone's attention as it could impact whether the Eagles can repeat as Super Bowl champions.
CBS Sports writer Garrett Podell shared his biggest storyline for each of the NFC teams. Podell's storyline for the Eagles revolved around the secondary.
"How cohesive will the young secondary look?"
"Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is now a Houston Texan, and six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay is now a Pittsburgh Steeler. That means the training wheels are now off for second-year cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, third-year cornerback Kelee Ringo and 2025 second-round pick safety Andrew Mukuba out of Texas. Their adjustment to starting roles in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme will be something to monitor throughout the offseason."
Last year's secondary was ranked number one against the pass, allowing 174.2 yards per game. They also helped the defense rank first in total defense, allowing 278.4 yards per game.
It will be a different-looking secondary with key players like Gardner-Johnson, Slay, James Bradberry, and Avonte Maddox gone. Mitchell and DeJean will start, but the Eagles must decide the other outside corner starter between Ringo and Adoree' Jackson. The safety position will be Reed Blankenship and either Sydney Brown, Tristin McCollum, or Mukuba.
Potential isn't the problem with the secondary, as there are plenty of young players who can step in and start. A lack of experience is the concern, as only five players are over 25, with Parry Nickerson being the oldest at 30.
There will be plenty of moving pieces in the secondary, especially with DeJean being expected to play slot corner and safety. That will open the door for other players like Ringo and Jackson to get playing time.
Eagles fans would like to know who ends up starting, but minicamp will not be the place for it. The minicamp workouts though will gives fans a much better idea of what the position will look like versus OTAs.
