It is rare to see Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman miss on a move over the last 10 years.
The most recent head-scratcher was signing edge rusher Bryce Huff last offseason, which has now been vindicated as a mistake after the Eagles traded him to the San Francisco 49ers. Roseman has also made some of the most significant and pivotal moves in franchise history, from signing running back Saquon Barkley in 2024 to trading for A.J. Brown in 2022.
There is one move though that might keep him up at night that most thought would be an impactful move turned out to be a 10-game disaster.
Bleacher Report writer Kristopher Knox wrote an article on each NFL team's worst trade they have made over the last 10 years. For the Eagles, it was the team making a trade with the Detroit Lions to send them a 2019 third-round pick in exchange for Pro Bowl wide receiver Golden Tate. Despite some other moves Roseman made during that time being considered questionable, Tate's trade did nothing to help the Eagles that season.
"Philly has mostly been on the winning end of trades since then, but its 2018 gamble with Golden Tate was an exception. After winning the Super Bowl the previous year, the Eagles were struggling to stay in contention and decided to add Tate in-season.
To acquire the final half-season of Tate's contract, Philadelphia sent a 2019 third-round pick to Detroit. He was coming off of back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons with the Lions, but that was still a fairly steep price for such a short-term rental.
The Eagles didn't get much in return either. Tate caught 30 passes for only 278 yards and a touchdown in eight appearances. Philly bowed out in the divisional round, and Tate signed with the rival New York Giants in the offseason."
At the time of this trade, the Eagles were 4-4 and struggling after winning the franchise's first Super Bowl the previous season. Tate was brought in to be a spark plug for the offense. Clearly that did not happen.
Instead, Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz gets hurt again and Nick Foles once again comes to the rescue and leads Philadelphia to the postseason at 9-7. It wasn't all bad for Tate as he did catch the game-winning touchdown from Foles in the NFC Wild Card game against the Chicago Bears with about a minute left in the game.
Outside of that, it was a nothing burger for Tate as he played just 10 games in an Eagles uniform before making his move to the Big Apple to finish his NFL career with the Giants.
Philadelphia went through a rough spell after their Super Bowl win with two years of 9-7 records with Wild Card losses and a 4-11-1 record in 2020 that cost head coach Doug Pederson his job. Tate, unfortunately, was a first signal of bad moves made by the Eagles in free agency, trades, and the NFL Draft.
The only positive aspect of those years was the selection of quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. That clever move by Roseman turned the franchise around and made them Super Bowl winners.
