Eagles go into Sunday night with major problem

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without receivers DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks for the second straight week when they visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday night, CBS Philadelphia reported.

Running back Saquon Barkley has no injury designation after a limited practice Friday, so he’s cleared to play. The Eagles are 2-5 and coming off five straight losses.

Barkley has been managing hamstring and back issues. He had missed practice earlier in the week, and Friday was his first work of the week, the Philadelphia Inquirer noted. That’s good news for an offense that has little else to lean on right now.

He missed two games with a hamstring injury before returning against Dallas on Monday night, where he ran for 62 yards and a touchdown, per Yahoo’s injury tracker.

Eagles receiver group will look thin again

Smith’s hamstring injury has now kept him out of three of Philadelphia’s seven games. Wicks is dealing with an ankle injury. Without them, the Eagles couldn’t keep pace with Dallas’s offense last week.

Receiver Britain Covey is also out, so the Eagles will have to find answers from a thinner group. Expect the offense to put even more weight on Barkley as both runner and receiver.

The Inquirer reported that linebacker Jihaad Campbell and cornerback Jonathan Jones are out as well. That weakens the defense at the same time the offense is short on playmakers.

Philadelphia’s injury report has been lengthy for weeks, and this week’s version didn’t shrink much.

The Eagles can’t afford another loss

Washington is 1-4-1, so this is a game the Eagles would normally expect to control. Instead, they enter as a team in a slump with an injury list that keeps growing.

A sixth straight loss would deepen the hole in the NFC East and make it harder to justify staying the course before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Sunday night will say a lot about how much the Eagles have left.
