The Philadelphia Eagles will open their season against the Washington Commanders, but there is a chance they’ll be without their offseason additions. Jonathan Greenard has been dealing with a pectoral injury before training camp, and since then, there has been uncertainty about whether he’ll be ready for the start of the season.
Head coach Nick Sirianni recently gave an update on Greenard’s status, and he had a cryptic answer.
“Nick Sirianni says ‘we’ll see’ when asked about Jonathan Greenard playing this week,” Shorr-Parks wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The Eagles placed Greenard on the physically unable to perform list, and he didn’t participate in any of training camp. There was a sense of optimism that he’d be back on the field before the opener, but as of now, it looks like he may still be recovering beyond this week.
If Greenard is sidelined, the Eagles will have to rely on Nolan Smith Sr., Jalyx Hunt and Arnold Ebiketie to get pressure on the quarterback.
The Eagles traded for Greenard during the week of the draft from the Minnesota Vikings, and then signed a four-year, $98 million extension with the team. The trenches have always been an area where the Eagles have succeeded on defense, and adding Greenard is going to make them even better when he’s healthy.
Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter were given huge contract extensions during the offseason, as they’ve been the two key players in the middle of the Eagles’ defense, and they’ll be looking to cause havoc for years to come.
Many are waiting to see what the Eagles will look like this season with some of the changes they made throughout the offseason, especially on offense. With the departure of AJ Brown and the addition of offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, the hope is that they find some better synergy on that side of the ball.
