Eagles surprisingly named trade partner for Dallas Goedert replacement

Entering the dog days of summer, the Philadelphia Eagles will be faced with interesting scenarios with free agents to sign and trades they could make.

Last week, the Eagles were finalizing a trade to send edge rusher Bryce Huff to the San Francisco 49ers for a mid-round draft pick. The move is expected to provide Philadelphia with an additional $15 million in cap space in 2025. That would put their salary cap at roughly $27 million after June 1.

That opens the door for the Eagles to be flexible and bring in some talent. An unlikely trade for a young tight end might help the team in more than one way.

Eagles might want to entertain a trade with 24-year-old tight end

USA Today's For The Win writer Cory Woodroof named five ideal trade partners for the Atlanta Falcons as they look to send off tight end Kyle Pitts after both sides reportedly have mutually agreed to seek a trade.

Philadelphia found itself on the list as they could send a 2026 third-round pick for him. One problem: Dallas Goedert is the Eagles' tight end so could both guys play together?

"The Eagles already have tight end Dallas Goedert on the roster, but Philly has the draft capital to make the Falcons an offer it couldn't refuse if the team really wanted to add Pitts to the roster. With a plethora of draft picks going into 2026, the Eagles could offer one of its third-round picks to see if that gets the job done. That would be the most Atlanta would get in draft compensation if Pitts left as a free agent next spring, anyhow."

Pitts was the fourth overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft and expected to be on the same level as George Kittle and Travis Kelce as the next great tight end. Lack of use in the offense and underwhelming performances has held back Pitts in Atlanta. He's caught 196 passes for 2,651 yards and 10 touchdowns in 61 games.

Goedert was the next man in line for Zach Ertz after the Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He's been considered on the edge of top 10 tight ends in the NFL after his 349 receptions for 4,085 yards and 24 touchdowns in 93 career games. What has hurt Goedert's production over the last three years has been...well, getting hurt as he has missed 15 games in that span.

This offseason was filled with speculation on whether Goedert was going to get traded from Philadelphia. Ultimately, both sides agreed to a restructured contract that would keep him with the Eagles for the 2025 season at $10 million.

The trade would most certainly bring some complications to the tight end positions, but it wouldn't be a downgrade by any means. Goedert has been more reliable with catching 73.3% of his passes, but Pitts can make bigger plays as he averages 13.5 yards per catch.

Grant Calcaterra exploded onto the scene last year, replacing the injured Goedert, so he would most likely drop to third-string tight end, and the offseason additions of Kylen Granson and Harrison Bryant would be a wash, as they would not have a high chance of making the final roster. The only way that Granson or Bryant stayed is if the Eagles move forward with trading Goedert.

Pitts isn't the most expensive option, as he is in the final year of his rookie deal, which will have a $10.8 million cap hit for 2025. With the same amount of pay as Goedert, they could both be used in the offense, while the Eagles could still make a move or two more in free agency.

Adding another offensive player isn't out of the realm of possibility, but Philadelphia has bigger needs to fill as Goedert and Calcaterra make for a formidable duo. Still, Pitts and Goedert would be more dangerous together and give Jalen Hurts his best one-two punch at tight end.
