The Philadelphia Eagles knew how important Thursday night's contest between the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions was for their chances to gain the top overall seed in the NFC playoffs.
It just didn't roll how Philadelphia would have wanted.
With Detroit's victory over Green Bay, they have stayed in the driver's seed for the conference's top seed and the coveted first-round bye through the playoffs.
Philadelphia sits at 10-2 with Detroit now at an impressive 12-1 mark. They have won 11 games in a row - a record for the franchise.
But while the Eagles may not be pleased with the lack of help in their quest for the top seed, the race is by no means over at this point. Detroit still has contests against the Minnesota Vikings, San Francisco 49ers, and the Buffalo Bills upcoming.
Two losses among those three could lead to the Lions missing out on the top seed.
Philadelphia would need to win out in that scenario, though. The reason why Thursday's game was so big was because a Lions loss to the Packers would mean the Eagles would have a better record against common opponents. That would have been a key tiebreaker.
Now that the Lions won, though, the tiebreaker to watch is the strength of victory - something the Eagles simply won't come close to this season with the NFC East struggling at times.
Detroit's win means the Eagles need a lot of help if they want to be the top seed in the NFC without having any slip-ups of their own. With three remaining games against the NFC East, and two additional games against the Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers, the odds aren't on their side anymore.
