General managers across the NFL are finally catching on to a strategy Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles have been utilizing for years.
The end of training camp is the perfect time to shake things up with a trade.
The Denver Broncos made a move Wednesday that even Roseman would be proud of — flipping 2024 seventh-round draft pick WR Devaughn Vele for a 2026 fourth and a 2027 seventh.
The Eagles have already made multiple moves this summer, turning defensive lineman Thomas Booker IV and tight end Harrison Bryant into cornerback Jakoroian Bennett and wide receiver John Metchie III. Philly has the draft capital — a project ed 13 selections in 2026, to be exact — to make another splash in the trade market with roster cut-down day looming on Tuesday, with edge rusher Azeez Ojulari and wide receiver Ainias Smith potentially on the way out.
That’s not to mention Philly's hottest trade asset — a player Roseman and the Eagles would be crazy to move on from (for now).
The Indianapolis Colts could soon be starting over at the QB position after naming Daniel Jones their starter over former No. 4 overall draft pick Anthony Richardson. With that in mind, Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay is urging Philadelphia to call Colts GM Chris Ballard with an offer for McKee.
The return? An undisclosed future second-round draft pick.
“With Tanner McKee showing out in preseason, the Eagles could capitalize on his upside and move him to a club desperate for help under center. The 2023 sixth-rounder has looked like a legitimate starter during his two exhibition appearances and could net a solid return from a team like the Indianapolis Colts.”
While flipping McKee for a prominent Day 2 pick is tempting, the Eagles would be crazy to move on from their ascending young QB too soon. McKee doesn’t only look like an NFL starter — he looks better than a number of projected starters in 2025. That’s a luxury at the most important position in football, and it’s one the Eagles surely won’t take lightly.
Would a second-round pick offset McKee’s current value as Jalen Hurts’ top backup? What about a rookie-scale contract that has McKee under team control through 2026 at barely $1 million per season?
Eventually, McKee is going to get his shot to be an NFL starter, and Philadelphia will likely help facilitate that with a trade. But they’re not going to move him just to move him, and at this point, Roseman should be hanging up the phone unless a first-round pick is on the table.
