The Philadelphia Eagles added another name to their growing injury list on Tuesday as wide receiver DeVonta Smith sat out of practice.
Reporters at training camp noticed Smith was absent when the Eagles took the field for their first padded practice of camp on August 4. Shortly after the session started, news broke that Smith was dealing with a hamstring injury.
The news raised some concern for a team that has already seen injuries during camp. Rookie wide receiver Makai Lemon also wasn’t practicing due to same hamstring problem. However, early indications suggest neither player faces a serious setback.
According to 94WIP reporter Eliot Shorr-Parks, the Eagles do not expect either injury to become a long-term problem.
“Devonta Smith and Makai Lemon are both not practicing today due to hamstring injuries,” Shorr-Parks wrote on X. “No long-term concern for either.”
Smith enters an important season for Philadelphia’s offense.
The Eagles traded AJ Brown to the New England Patriots earlier this offseason. That move leaves Smith as Jalen Hurts’ top receiving option heading into the 2026 season.
Without Brown commanding a large share of targets, Smith now sits at the center of the passing attack. Early reports from training camp have painted a positive picture. While the offense has experienced some ups and downs during practices, Smith has consistently been brilliant.
That makes Tuesday’s injury update worth watching.
Hamstring injuries often require careful management during training camp, especially for players who rely on speed and sharp route running. Even though the Eagles do not view the issue as serious, the team will likely monitor Smith closely over the coming days.
For now, Philadelphia appears confident that the injury will not keep its top receiver sidelined for long. Still, any missed time for Smith will be problematic, given his expected role in the offense this season.
As camp continues, the Eagles will hope Smith returns soon and resumes the strong start he showed before Tuesday’s absence.
