Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris said he still trusts Younghoe Koo amid a rough patch.
Koo's slump continued when he missed a 35-yard field goal early in Sunday's 17-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The 30-year-old has missed a career-high eight attempts this season, including three in a 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints last month.
Koo bounced back Sunday to covert 41 and 26-yard field goals in the third quarter. But while trailing by four early in the final quarter, Morris kept his offense on the field for a 4th-and-2 at the 14. The Falcons converted the first down before Kirk Cousins threw one of his four interceptions.
Addressing reporters Monday, Morris said Koo's miss didn't affect his decision to attempt the fourth down. He would have sent out the field goal team had Cousins not thrown a pick on the ensuing third-and-long.
"I got a lot of confidence in Koo," Morris said (h/t Pro Football Talk). "Koo should not have missed that first one. He'll be the first one to tell you there. Didn't hit it right. Right after that, he was able to strike those things and hit it the right way. Those things just affect you like the momentum of the game. It doesn’t affect your decision-making at the end of the day because I know Koo is ready to go and ready to kick. I'm pretty confident about that with Koo."
Koo went three full seasons without missing a field-goal try within 40 yards before doing so twice in Atlanta's last three games. It's also the first season he's ever missed three attempts from 40 to 49 yards.
Only six active qualified kickers, including the slumping Justin Tucker, have a higher career field-goal percentage than Koo's 86.2. He didn't go below 86.5 in his first six seasons with the Falcons before falling to 72.4 in 2024.
Morris' comments don't indicate any plans to change kickers. Atlanta's first-year head coach is also sticking with Cousins for a Week 14 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
