According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Atlanta Falcons have created an extra $6 million in cap space by restructuring the contract of wide receiver Darnell Mooney.
Teams creating cap space via contract restructures:
The Falcons created $6M by restructuring WR Darnell Mooney’s deal
The Bills created just under $8M by restructuring OT Dion Dawkins’ deal
The Bears created $8M by restructuring CB Jaylon Johnson’s deal

According to Spotrac, the Falcons did this by converting $7.5 million of Mooney’s 2025 salary into a signing bonus.
The Falcons wide receiver signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the team last offseason, and he rewarded them with a breakout campaign, one that saw him finish just eight yards shy of 1,000 yards receiving.
Mooney is currently dealing with a shoulder injury that he suffered on the first day of training camp. He is currently listed as day-to-day, and his status for the Falcons Week 1 matchup with the Bucs is up in the air.
As far as why the Falcons might be freeing up this money, perhaps it’s just in case of emergency for some mid-season acquisitions. Atlanta is already in a very rough spot at right tackle, as Kaleb McGary is out for the season and Storm Norton is dealing with a serious ankle injury. They will likely be aggressive pursuing any alternatives that become available throughout the season.
