Falcons Lose Star Pass Rusher To Suspension

The Falcons just took a massive hit to their defense before the 2026 season has even started.

Atlanta defensive end James Pearce Jr. has reportedly been suspended eight games for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy stemming from his off-field incident earlier this offseason.

The suspension had been looming for a while. ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently reported there was essentially no question Pearce would be suspended, with the only uncertainty surrounding how long the punishment would be.

Now Atlanta will reportedly be without one of its best young defensive players for half the regular season.

That’s brutal considering what Pearce did as a rookie.

The former first-round pick exploded for 10.5 sacks in 2025, immediately becoming the type of pass rusher Atlanta had been searching for seemingly forever. He also recorded 26 tackles, five passes defended and a forced fumble.

And the timing makes things even worse.

The Falcons were already dealing with major questions at edge rusher, including the season-ending ACL injury to Jalon Walker. Atlanta recently signed veteran Cameron Sample to add some much-needed depth as it prepared for a potentially lengthy Pearce suspension.

Now that depth is going to be tested immediately.

Pearce has the talent to become one of the NFL’s better young pass rushers, but none of that matters if he isn’t available.

The Falcons will eventually get him back, but surviving the first eight games without their top young edge rusher could have a major impact on Atlanta’s season.
