Falcons score a massive win with new offensive coordinator hire

New Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris got his guy.

On Saturday evening, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported Rams quarterbacks coach and pass game coordinator Zac Robinson is set to follow Morris to Atlanta, where he'll become the Falcons offensive coordinator.

A popular candidate this hiring cycle, Robinson also interviewed for the opening offensive coordinator positions in Pittsburgh and New Orleans. But Atlanta became his most likely destination once Morris got the Falcons job.

Robinson was assistant quarterbacks coach in 2021 when the Rams won Super Bowl LVI and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2022.
Being part of the Sean McVay coaching tree, Robinson should help make the Falcons offense much more exciting in 2024.

This season, the Falcons ranked 17th in total offense (334.3 yards per game) and 26th in scoring (18.9 points per game).

They have talented playmakers, including wide receiver Drake London, tight end Kyle Pitts and running back Bijan Robinson, and will likely upgrade at quarterback during the offseason. Kirk Cousins is a pending free agent, Russell Wilson is expected to be cut by the Broncos and Justin Fields will be on the trade block if the Bears decide to draft a quarterback.

The Falcons will be a major player for any of those three. If they sign one, they should be the favorite to win the NFC South next season.
The defense was much improved in 2023 and will retain many of the same pieces. Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen left for the Jaguars, but Morris is one of the league's top defensive coaches, so a dropoff shouldn't be expected on that side of the ball.

The Buccaneers won the division for the third year in a row but must replace departing offensive coordinator Dave Canales, who left for the division-foe Panthers. They probably won't be much better next season than they were this season when they went 2-15, while the Saints are rudderless with an aging roster and questions about their coaching staff.

The Falcons have a legitimate path to their first division crown since 2016. The hirings of Morris and Robinson are steps in that direction.
