Fanatics: Bills QB Josh Allen has top-selling jersey
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

Fanatics recently released its list of top-selling NFL jerseys from Aug. 1 through the kickoff to the 2021 season, and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen led the way ahead of other high-profile field generals.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared a snapshot of the top five NFL jerseys, as Tampa Bay Buccaneers legend Tom Brady and Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes crack the top five, along with Brady’s successor in New England, Mac Jones, and Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields:

Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes eclipsed after epic 1-2 run in top-selling NFL jerseys

From March 2020 through the end of May of this year, Brady and Mahomes accounted for the first- and second-most NFL jerseys sold respectively.

The star power of Brady and Mahomes is obvious. They just faced each other In Super Bowl LV, and the latter seems to have the best chance of anyone to eventually catch TB12 as the undisputed GOAT at the position.

In late July, the NFLPA announced that, “among all officially licensed products sold” either Brady or Mahomes led the quarterly rankings 12 times in a row, dating all the way back to October 2018.

Mahomes was in the midst of his run to league MVP honors during that time, while Brady was in pursuit of his sixth Super Bowl win with the New England Patriots. The QBs wound up meeting in the AFC title game that postseason, with New England prevailing 37-31 in overtime.

Mac Jones succeeding Tom Brady, Justin Fields in Chicago generating huge buzz

Thanks largely to Brady’s greatness, the anticipation to see who’ll be his long-term heir on the Patriots definitely contributed to Jones’ NFL jerseys flying off the shelves.

Despite playing with a loaded cast of future pro players at Alabama, Jones proved himself worthy in training camp and the preseason to the point that Patriots head coach Bill Belichick released incumbent starter Cam Newton.

As for Fields, he’s in the big market of Chicago and played on the big stage in college at Ohio State, with his last game coming against Jones and Alabama for the national title.

The Bears have never had a dual-threat signal-caller like Fields in their franchise’s history, so the buzz around him is truly unique. Plus, there’s something kind of dangerous and saucy about a No. 1 jersey.

One player of note who’s worn that same number with a similar dynamic running ability to Fields: Cam Newton. How about that?

Josh Allen jersey sales could be a sign of bigger things to come

Let’s circle back to the leading man. It’s telling that Allen leads the way among the fresh-faced rookies and growing legends he’s beaten out of late.

Bigger-brand teams exist in New York in the Jets and Giants, but thanks to Allen realizing his potential as a true face of the franchise, Buffalo is a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Allen is coming off a true breakout 2020 campaign that saw him make the most incredible Year 3 leap forward from a QB in NFL history. His completion rate jumped to 69.2% from 58.8% the prior season. He threw 37 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions and ran for 421 yards and eight more TDs.

Not only could Allen help his team to a championship, but he’s also a trendy pick for league MVP honors, entering Week 1 as a favorite along with Mahomes, reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers and Brady, which would only boost his jersey sales even more.

The Bills have dealt with lots of heartbreak, losing four straight Super Bowls in the early 1990s. They haven’t really been the same since then. Allen has come along and inspired hope in Buffalo that a Lombardi Trophy could be in the team’s near future.

Allen’s cannon arm, running ability and tempered gunslinger style of play make the 25-year-old phenom a fan favorite not only in Western New York, but also for any football purist who just loves seeing a quality player capitalize on such incredible talent. His No. 1 status among the top-selling NFL jerseys says a lot about Allen’s exciting trajectory.
