Favre says Packers drafting Love isn't like when they drafted Rodgers

When the Green Bay Packers moved up in the first round of the draft to take Jordan Love, many noted the similarities of when the team drafted Aaron Rodgers in 2005. But Brett Favre, who was the Packers' starter at the time, says there is one key difference between that draft and this one.

"I think when I look at this situation with Aaron and my situation, yes, they're very, very similar," Favre told the Wisconsin State-Journal. "But there is a big difference: They were several plays away from the Super Bowl this year. When we drafted Aaron, that wasn't the case."

It's true that the Packers were not exactly close to the Super Bowl in 2005. While they did manage to win the NFC North by going 10-6, they lost to the Vikings at home in the Wild Card round. Still, many would say that it's a bit of stretch to say the Packers were 'several plays away from the Super Bowl this year.' The team did play in the NFC Championship Game, but they were annihilated by the San Francisco 49ers.

And even with that context, it's hard to overlook the similarities. Favre was 35 when the team drafted Rodgers, who is now 36. Both won a Super Bowl for Green Bay, but struggled to follow-up on that success in the postseason. And while Favre admitted there is a difference, he still has said he believes that Rodgers will likely end his career outside of Green Bay, like he did.

"When his contract gets close to running out, it also will be running out for Jordan Love," Favre said. "And at that point, do you re-up Aaron for (a few more years) for $40 or $50 million, or do you go with the young guy and give him a new deal? I just don't see the young guy getting a new, blockbuster deal without ever really proving himself. That's really why I said Aaron would probably play elsewhere."
