Female Broadcaster Set to Make NFL History this Season
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The history of NFL broadcasts has stood the test of time. From the first radio broadcast of an NFL game in 1934 to the present day, radio play-by-play of professional sports, especially the NFL, has been one of the premier ways to consume a game.

Since that first game on Thanksgiving Day 1934, football on the radio has predominantly been handled by men. However, in August 2016, broadcaster Kate Scott became the first female to call a preseason NFL game on the radio.

Later this month, Scott is set to make more radio broadcast history in the 2025 NFL season.

Scott has been assigned to call the matchup between the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 28 for Westwood One, which is the official radio partner of the NFL, according to The Athletic. With this broadcast, Scott will become the first female play-by-play announcer to call a regular-season NFL game for Westwood One.

This history is nothing new to Scott, as she has been breaking barriers her entire career. After calling two San Francisco 49ers preseason games in 2016, she became the first woman to call a football game on the Pac-12 Network in 2017.

In 2020, for International Women's Day, Scott was part of the first-ever all-female broadcast crew for an NHL game in the U.S. on NBC Sports Network. One year later, she broadcast a Golden State Warriors game as the play-by-play voice, becoming the first woman to do an NBA game on the radio in that role.

Since 2021, Scott has been the television voice of the Philadelphia 76ers, making her the second woman to hold a full-time play-by-play job for a major men's professional team.

This new opportunity for Scott to call an NFL game on Westwood One is just another step in her journey of paving the way for women in sports.
