For years, the Las Vegas Raiders have searched for something that felt stable. Coaching changes, quarterback uncertainty and another string of losing seasons left the franchise drifting without a long-term identity. But everything changed the moment the Raiders selected Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Now comes the difficult part.

The Raiders are asking Mendoza to lead one of the NFL’s biggest rebuilds while navigating one of football’s toughest schedules. Las Vegas enters 2026 with the league’s seventh-hardest slate based on opponents’ combined winning percentage from last season, and the rookie quarterback will not get much time to adjust. Between brutal AFC West matchups and multiple playoff-caliber opponents outside the division, Mendoza’s first NFL season could quickly become a trial by fire.

Still, for the first time in a long time, there is legitimate excitement surrounding the Raiders. New head coach Klint Kubiak brings offensive credibility, while stars like Brock Bowers and Ashton Jeanty give the offense real explosiveness. On defense, Maxx Crosby remains the emotional centerpiece of the franchise.

The optimism is real. The schedule, however, is unforgiving.

Raiders Throw Fernando Mendoza Into Immediate Pressure

There are very few easy landing spots on the Raiders’ 2026 schedule.

Las Vegas opens the season against the Miami Dolphins before road trips to face the Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints. By Week 4, Mendoza already faces a massive divisional showdown against Kansas City Chiefs and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Things only become more difficult from there.

The Raiders also draw games against the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers before December arrives.

For a rookie quarterback, there are very few opportunities to simply settle in.

The AFC West Gives Raiders Almost No Margin For Error

Even if Mendoza proves ready faster than expected, the division alone presents enormous challenges.

The Denver Broncos continue to improve, the Chargers remain dangerous with Justin Herbert, and the Chiefs still control the division until someone proves otherwise.

That reality makes every divisional game feel magnified for Las Vegas.

The Raiders also do not benefit much from their fourth-place schedule. While games against the Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns look manageable on paper, all three teams are trying to climb out of difficult stretches themselves.

There are very few guaranteed wins anywhere on this schedule.

Raiders Finally Have Something Worth Building Around

Even if the wins do not immediately follow, the biggest difference for Las Vegas is that the franchise finally appears to have direction.

Mendoza arrives with enormous expectations after a historic final college season, but the Raiders are surrounding him with intriguing young talent. Bowers already looks like one of the NFL’s most dangerous offensive weapons, while Jeanty gives Kubiak flexibility to build a more balanced offense.

The defense also added several young contributors through the draft to complement Crosby and a veteran core that still plays with edge and physicality.

That does not automatically make the Raiders playoff contenders in 2026. But after years of uncertainty, Las Vegas finally looks like a team trying to build toward something sustainable rather than simply surviving another season.

The brutal reality for Mendoza is that the NFL will test him immediately. The encouraging reality for Raiders fans is that, for the first time in years, those tests might actually matter for the future.
