Former NFL head coach Dan Reeves dies at age 77

Dan Reeves, a two-time AP Coach of the Year and the 10th winningest coach in NFL history, died early Saturday morning at age 77, his family announced.

"Legendary NFL player and coach Dan Reeves passed away early this morning, peacefully and surrounded by his loving family at his home in Atlanta, GA," the Reeves family said in a statement given to NFL Network. "He passed away at age 77 due to complications from a long illness. His legacy will continue through his many friends, players and fans as well as the rest of the NFL community. Arrangements are still to be determined."

Reeves played quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks before transitioning to running back during his NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys. He played eight seasons for the team, then transitioned into a coaching career as an assistant with the Cowboys.

In 1981, Reeves broke into the head coaching ranks with the Denver Broncos and later had stints as the head coach of the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons. He compiled a 190-165-2 regular season record over those three tenures as well as a 11-9 record in the postseason. Four times Reeves led a team to the Super Bowl, although he was unsuccessful at ever winning one as a head coach.

Reeves was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2014.
