Former NFL Head Coach Has Died at 74

Dave McGinnis, the longtime NFL coach fondly remembered as “Coach Mac,” passed away on Monday at the age of 74. The Tennessee Titans organization made the announcement, noting that he died in Nashville surrounded by loved ones.

His death marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned several decades and touched multiple franchises across the league.

The Titans released a statement expressing their sorrow and offering support to those closest to him.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Dave “Coach Mac” McGinnis, who passed away Monday afternoon in Nashville with family at his side,” the team said.

McGinnis earned a reputation as a dedicated and energetic leader during his time in the NFL. He first stepped into the head coaching role with the Arizona Cardinals, initially taking over on an interim basis in 2000 before holding the position through the end of the 2003 season. During that stretch, his teams compiled a record of 17 wins and 40 losses.

The Cardinals organization also shared its grief over the loss. In a message from owner Michael Bidwill, the team highlighted McGinnis’s deep connection to the sport.

“We were deeply saddened to learn of Dave McGinnis’ passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved him,” Bidwill stated. “As Dave often said, he was a ‘ball coach’ through and through, and no one ever filled that role with more passion, enthusiasm, and charisma. Coach Mac truly loved the game and everything — and everyone — associated with it, especially his players. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.”

Before rising to the head coaching level, McGinnis built a solid foundation in the coaching ranks. He launched his NFL career as the linebackers coach for the Chicago Bears from 1986 to 1995. He then moved to the Cardinals, where he served as defensive coordinator from 1996 until 2000, helping shape the team’s defensive schemes during that period.

Following his release from the Cardinals after the 2003 season, McGinnis joined the Titans as their linebackers coach. He remained in that position from 2004 through 2011, contributing to the team’s defensive efforts over several seasons.

His coaching journey continued when he followed head coach Jeff Fisher to the Los Angeles Rams, serving as assistant head coach from 2012 to 2016.

Even after stepping away from the sidelines in a full-time capacity, McGinnis stayed connected to the game he cherished.
