A Super Bowl ring belonging to former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress reportedly sold for a record-setting amount.
According to Cllct Media's Darren Rovell, Burress's Super Bowl 42 ring sold for $280,600 at Heritage Auctions on Saturday night. It's the highest amount for a Super Bowl ring, passing the $230,000 paid for Lawrence Taylor's Super Bowl 25 memento.
In 2008, Burress famously predicted that the Giants would upset the undefeated New England Patriots. He made that vision a reality by catching Eli Manning's game-winning 13-yard touchdown pass with 35 seconds remaining.
The Giants, who went 10-6 with a plus-22 point differential during the regular season, earned a shocking 17-14 win over a team that brandished the best scoring margin in NFL history.
Burress, who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, registered 1,025 yards and a career-high 12 touchdowns during the 2007 season. The former first-round pick led New York to the Super Bowl with 151 yards in an NFC Championship Game victory over Brett Favre's Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.
According to Spotrac, Burress made approximately $29.4 million in career earnings. However, his career went south after his Super Bowl heroics when the wideout accidentally shot himself in the leg at a nightclub in November 2008. He served 20 months in jail for attempted weapon possession.
Since then, Burress has faced financial hardships. Ten years ago, he pleaded guilty to tax evasion after failing to pay $46,000 in New Jersey state taxes on his 2013 income. Burress was sentenced to probation after striking a plea deal.
In 2018, banks issued a foreclosure on his home purchased for $1.5 million after he and his wife, Tiffany, allegedly stopped paying property taxes.
