Former Raiders head coach Jon Gruden could possibly find himself on the Lions coaching staff this year

It was not long ago when you'd see a lot of Detroit Lions fans get on social media and talk about how they wanted the Detroit Lions to hire Jo Gruden as their new head coach. That move never happened and probably never will, but that does not mean that there's no way Gruden won't join the Lions staff. It could happen, and it could happen as soon as this year. If it were to happen, here's how.

New Lions offensive coordinator John Morton gives a lot of credit for his success to Gruden. He's part of the Jon Gruden coaching tree, and Gruden is his mentor. That goes all the way back to when Morton was a receiver in the NFL. He was brought in by the Raiders and then cut and signed by the Packers. That's where he met Gruden. Years later, Gruden would hire Morton to be an offensive assistant on his staff with the Raiders. He then joined Gruden again in 2019 when Gruden went back to the Raiders. There's a 20-plus-year history between the two guys.

Gruden is currently in Detroit with the Lions this week as a guest of the team and showed up decked out in Lions gear. He already looks like someone who is on the coaching staff. When he talked with the media on Monday, Gruden said he still has the itch to get out there and coach and misses doing it. He's not going to be up for any head coaching roles soon, but what the Lions could do with him is something they've already done with coaches before. He can be brought on as a senior offensive assistant.

The Lions have had a few different former head coaches come in as assistants. John Fox most recently. The former Broncos head coach was a senior defensive assistant. Before that, it was former Texans head coach Dom Capers. He held the same role.

In addition to that, last year, we saw the Green Bay Packers hire former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh to be an offensive consultant after he was let go by the Jets. Saleh used that opportunity to get back onto the 49ers staff as their defensive coordinator. It's a bit outside of the box, but it works.

This wouldn't necessarily mean that Gruden is going to be out there calling plays or have a big input on what goes into the offense, but it would make him another mind that can be picked. It would also get him back on a coaching staff again. The thing he wants to do. We'll see what happens. I wouldn't rule it out.
