A reunion eight years in the making is set to take place within the Miami Dolphins organization.
On Thursday, National Football League agent Brett Tessler wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that one of his clients, free agent cornerback Cornell Armstrong, will sign a one-year contract with the Dolphins. Financial figures of the deal have yet to be released.
The signing serves as a full-circle moment for Armstrong, who the Dolphins selected with a sixth-round pick (No. 209 overall) in the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent just one year with the team, appearing in 15 games and making eight total tackles before being released ahead of his sophomore campaign.
Armstrong has more recently played for the Houston Texans (2019-2020), Atlanta Falcons (2021-2022), and Las Vegas Raiders (2023). Since being cut by the Raiders on August 27, 2024, he has not been affiliated with any NFL team.
Armstrong has made 39 regular-season appearances in the league, with his most recent on-field action coming in 2022, the year he started four games for the Falcons. He is credited with 33 career tackles and seven passes defended.
Armstrong's signing immediately addresses a position of need on the Dolphins' roster. The organization dealt All-Pro Jalen Ramsey to the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this offseason, and it remains in the market for a like-for-like replacement. The Dolphins' cornerback depth took another hit on Wednesday, when veteran Arnie Burns left team headquarters on crutches and is feared to have suffered a season-ending ACL tear.
