New York Jets receiver Garrett Wilson, one could say, has done superbly well given what has been around him since being drafted.
With a quarterback position that changes almost every week, Wilson has been a beacon of consistency in his three seasons, surpassing 1,000 yards each year along with at least 80 recpetions and three touchdowns.
Now he's approaching Year 4, and he wants to get paid, but exactly what that number looks like is unknown.
However, ESPN's Rich Cimini believes that Wilson's contract negotiations will intensify once training camp begins.
"Talks are in the early stages; this feels like a situation that will heat up in training camp," Cimini wrote. "Despite inconsistent quarterback play, Wilson has recorded three straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons. He's probably looking for a deal in the $30 million-a-year range. After June 2, the Jets will be among the leaders in cap room, so there's enough flexibility to make it happen."
If Wilson does get the $30 million APY as Cimini suggests, that would put him on the same salary as Tyreek Hill, Brandon Aiyuk, and Amon-Ra St. Brown, which we think is easily justifiable.
Seen as one of the pillars new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey want to build around, we don't get any sense that a new contract won't be forthcoming.
With Justin Fields, Wilson's former Ohio State teammate, now in the Big Apple, bigger things are expected of No. 5 in Year 4. There appears to be confidence that a deal will be struck between both parties; it just feels like a matter of time.
And that time might very well be when training camp begins.
