George Kittle is reportedly in good shape to play in the 49ers’ season opener. Kittle is an important part of San Francisco’s offense, making the possibility of his availability a notable development entering Week 1.

The update does not amount to a final game-day decision. It does, however, indicate that Kittle is trending toward availability rather than being ruled out as the season begins. His status remains a central question as the 49ers prepare for their opening matchup.

What’s Driving the Update

Kittle was activated from the physically unable to perform list as he continued his recovery from a torn right Achilles. That transaction placed him back in consideration for the opener and provided the basis for the latest update.

The report also indicated that Kittle would travel with the 49ers for the season-opening game in Australia against the Rams.

“He’s looked good,” offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak told reporters on Tuesday morning (Monday night in the United States). “Super impressed with how he’s looked considering the injury he had and how quickly he got back out on the field and just committed to his rehab. And it’s been pretty cool just to see Kittle out there looking like himself to me, looking fresh.”

Kittle’s absence traces back to a torn Achilles suffered during San Francisco’s wild-card win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

That injury explains why the latest availability update has drawn attention. For now, the key supported point is that Kittle has moved from being unavailable to being in contention for the season opener. The remaining questions concern whether that progress will translate into an active designation and what role he could have in the game plan.

The 49ers’ final injury report and inactive list will provide the clearest confirmation of Kittle’s status for the opener. If he is active, the game itself will offer the first indication of how San Francisco plans to deploy him following his recovery.

“We’ve got to see how he gets through the rest of the week. We’ve got two more practices, but Kittle looks good,” Kubiak said.

He added, “How that affects him on game day and what the workload is, that’ll be determined. But he looks good to me, he’s practicing full speed, he’s getting a ton of reps, so I feel like we’re in good shape.”
