George Pickens makes bold claim about playing alongside CeeDee Lamb in Dallas Cowboys offense

When George Pickens takes the field as a Dallas Cowboy in September, he will do so as WR2 while CeeDee Lamb spearheads the group.

That’s a big change from his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was the only dynamic playmaker on an anemic offense. But in his eyes, WR1 vs WR2 is nothing but fan talk, something he told reporters.

"When I used to watch football. there was always a good receiver and there was always a good receiver on the side of him,” Pickens told reporters on a press conference call, via Jane Slater. “So I just feel like we're going to work off each other really well."

More than anything else, Pickens’ bold claim—and it is bold to suggest the guy who signed a $136 million contract last offseason isn’t exactly WR1 and instead both are “good receivers”—speaks more to what the Cowboys offense can accomplish with two high-end weapons.

For a few years now, the Cowboys have struggled when Lamb is taken away by opposing defenses through double coverage. That was a story in the two playoff losses to the San Francisco 49ers and during the blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers. Now, as Pickens explains, defenses will have a tough time doubling both. 

"Schematically you won't be able to double everybody," Pickens said via The Athletic's Jon Machota. "That will be a great thing for me and him."

As the newest Cowboys 1-2 punch at receiver, Lamb and Pickens could be among the NFL’s finest WR duos. For Pickens, it’s a golden opportunity to put up top-tier numbers and propel himself to the top of the WR market with a new deal next offseason—be it in Dallas or elsewhere.

As long as he keeps his behavior in check and stays out of trouble within the locker room, he should be able to do it.
