Giants' Daniel Jones disrespected in rankings by league insiders?

New York Giants legend Tiki Barber believes Daniel Jones can become the NFC East's best overall quarterback and a top-10 NFL signal-caller.

Others within the football community don't yet share Barber's opinions.

In the annual quarterback tiers piece shared by Mike Sando of The Athletic on Monday, it was learned that 50 league insiders voted and ranked Jones 19th among 30 veteran quarterbacks ahead of the upcoming season.

Jones fell into the third tier of players at the position that includes "legitimate" starters who need "a heavier running game and/or defensive component to win."

While one head coach noted for the article he loved how Jones "took care of the ball" during the quarterback's first season playing under Giants coach Brian Daboll, that unnamed insider also questioned if the 26-year-old possesses an arm that "will ever elevate those around him."

Specifically, Statmuse shows Jones led the NFL for the 2022 regular season with an interception percentage of 1.1%. Across 16 games, Jones tossed a career-low five picks, and he also finished fifth among quarterbacks with 708 rushing yards.

Per ESPN, he ended the campaign tied for sixth among qualified players with a 60.8 adjusted QBR even though he only recorded 15 touchdowns through the air while playing without a true No. 1 wide receiver.

"He’s a function of the offense," a defensive coordinator told The Athletic about Jones. "I don’t think from an arm standpoint he does a whole lot that is going to scare you, but his speed does. And I do think Brian Daboll protects his quarterbacks, even (Buffalo Bills starter) Josh Allen, by giving them very predictable throws, successful throws, easy throws to skill players who can go make a play. And then he takes his shots."

By signing Jones in March to a four-year contract that could prove to be a two-season deal when all is said and done, the Giants gave the 2019 first-round draft pick some temporary job security via an agreement that allowed them to also hold onto star running back Saquon Barkley for at least one more campaign.

Big Blue then acquired tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders to serve as Jones' primary target and a weapon who ideally will help the young quarterback make a significant leap this fall.

"I don’t know if he can carry the team yet," an executive said about Jones.

With Barkley in the backfield for another season, Jones may not have to routinely put the New York offense on his back before September 2024 at the earliest.

Jones has already shown he can win a road playoff game, but he'll have to bolster his overall passing numbers if he wants to rise in quarterback power rankings by this time next year.
