The New York Giants have already had quite the exciting offseason. New York hired John Harbaugh at head coach and started a systematic process of retooling the team’s roster. Perhaps the biggest move of the offseason was trading Dexter Lawrence to the Bengals in exchange for the 10th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Lawrence has been an institution in New York ever since being drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Now the Giants can move on into a new era armed with two top 10 selections in the draft.
Everything is possible for the Giants because they have two first-round picks. They should be able to move up or down the draft board however they want because of the added flexibility.
Should New York make another trade on draft day? Or should they stick and pick in their current position?
One possibility stands out as New York’s perfect trade option during the 2026 NFL Draft.
The 2026 draft class features some elite defensive talent, especially the top five players.
Now that the Giants have two premium picks, it has to be tempting to come away with two of those defensive players. That’s exactly why New York should acquire the sixth overall pick to make sure it happens.
The Giants could make back-to-back selections in the top 10 by acquiring the sixth overall pick. And on paper, it should not be difficult to pull off.
According the Jimmy Johnson trade chart, the difference between the sixth and 10th overall picks is just 300 points. That is equivalent to a late second-round pick, specifically the 60th overall pick. If that’s all it takes to move up four spots, the Giants should easily be able to make it happen.
Let’s assume the Giants offer the 37th overall pick (worth 530 points) in exchange for the trade up, plus additional late-round compensation. That could be a win-win for both teams.
It helps that the sixth pick belongs to the Browns, who are apparently interested in trading down. Cleveland could love the idea of trading down but still remaining in the top 10.
But who could the Giants land if they pulled off such a trade?
The Giants could guarantee that they land two elite players by acquiring the sixth overall pick.
It is safe to assume that Fernando Mendoza will be the first overall pick to the Raiders. That would leave only three teams picking after Las Vegas before New York goes on the clock.
Most mock drafts have Arvell Reese (Ohio State), David Bailey (Texas Tech), and Jeremiyah Love (Notre Dame) going off the board with those picks. If that is true, then New York could land two elite Ohio State defenders in linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs after that.
Styles and Down would both be big upgrades for the Giants. They also come with some immediate chemistry after playing on the same defense in college.
The brilliance of this trade is that it guarantees that New York lands somebody good. Even if there are one or two surprises in the top five, any change would push another player down the board. So even if someone swipes Styles before the Giants, another player like Love or Bailey would land in their lap instead.
The biggest assumption about this trade is that New York has all of the players listed above high on their draft board. If the Giants are not sold on any of those players, then the situation becomes a little murkier.
Remember, New York’s defense already boasts superstar players like Abdul Carter and Brian Burns. Adding two more superstars could make the unit even more dangerous moving forward.
Ultimately, the Giants could stick and pick and still be in a great situation. But New York needs to think of every possibility given how unique their situation is. Even an aggressive move like picking back-to-back in the top 10.
