The New York Giants have continued shopping at the discount rack in free agency, complementing safety Jevon Holland with an assortment of depth pieces on both sides of the ball and special teams.
The Giants also re-signed receiver Darius Slayton, ensuring their longest-turned offensive player will spend the foreseeable future in East Rutherford. The Slayton signing filled out New York’s starting lineup, but general manager Joe Schoen has made it clear the work is not done at receiver.
On Monday, the team hosted veteran receiver Zach Pascal for a free agent visit. On Friday, it pulled the trigger on a separate depth addition.
The Giants signed big-bodied receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to a one-year deal.
According to Jimmy Gould, Humphrey’s agent, the Denver Broncos offered the receiver a one-year deal, but New York offers more opportunities.
“Lots of love for Sean (Payton) but very happy for LJ and his future with the Giants,” he said.
Prospective signings have taken notice of the lack of Giants depth at receiver. With Malik Nabers, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Darius Slayton locked in with the starters, 2023 third-round pick Jalin Hyatt. He’s joined by Bryce Ford-Wheaton, Montrell Washington, and returnman Ihmir Smith-Marsette – none of which have a guaranteed roster spot on next year’s team.
Humphrey, at about 6-4 and 220 pounds, brings size and versatility to New York’s receiver room. While he moonlights outside thanks to his frame, his usage is more emblematic of a slot-bound tight end’s skill set.
Humphrey, who ran a 4.75-second 40-yard dash during his pre-draft circuit, is not fleet of foot. He’s not a natural separator or a true deep threat. However, he’ll enter the Giants receiving corps as its best blocker – by far – and has trustworthy hands that can be trusted over the middle and above the rim.
That may not be enough to earn him a roster spot, especially with only brief cameos on special teams, but there isn’t enough talent to push him off the roster just yet, and there’s a world in which he’s the team’s fourth receiver on Week 1.
He played the second most snaps at receiver for Denver in 2024, generating 31 catches for 293 yards and a touchdown. He’ll hope to make more of an impact in his age-27 season.
