Giants’ third-year cornerback could take huge leap in new position
John Jones-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Giants have an opening in their defensive lineup. Opposite Deonte Banks, the Giants entered the offseason without a clear-cut starter at their second cornerback position. After electing not to sign a veteran talent to fill that hole, Big Blue is banking on third-year cornerback Cor’Dale Flott to step into the job.

The Giants have confidence in Cor’Dale Flott at CB2

Perhaps the biggest wild card in the Giants’ young and inexperienced secondary is Flott. He has spent the majority of his career playing in the nickel cornerback spot, but in 2024, he will be trying his hand on the boundary.

According to Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post, the Giants felt like Flott was “miscast” in the slot cornerback role last season. They plan on giving him a chance to start on the outside this year.

“He’s been tremendous this offseason — studying, working,” defensive backs coach Jerome Henderson told Dunleavy and The Post. “I expect Flott to have a really productive, good year for us. You hope he takes a really big jump, and he’s doing everything to take that jump.”

Flott is a wiry 6-foot-2, 175-pound cornerback. In 2023, he played 518 defensive snaps, totaling 36 combined tackles, five pass defenses, one interception, and surrendering a 59.6% completion rate in coverage. Flott’s thin frame has kept him playing inside through the first two seasons of his career, but Henderson spoke highly of the young corner’s aggression:

“The young man is a worker, a conscientious kid, he wants to do right, he wants to play well, he’s naturally tough,” Henderson said. “If he was 200 pounds, he would be hell on wheels.”

Flott will be among the Giants’ top breakout candidates when he takes the field this season. Big Blue needs to solidify that No. 2 cornerback spot opposite Banks and Flott could be the young man to take that job and run with it.
