The New York Giants No. 1 quarterback, running back and wide receiver look good on paper, but as we all know the NFL is played on turf.
The Giants 'Triplets' earned the No. 22 overall ranking from CBS Sports, a mark that was "too high" according to author CBS Sports' Tyler Durbin.
A panel of CBS NFL writers judged each team's starting quarterback, running back and WR1 and ranked the top-32. The Giants, featuring Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers, ranked third among NFC East teams, behind the Dallas Cowboys (No. 5), Philadelphia Eagles (No. 10) and Washington Commanders (No. 24).
Nabers' Week 1 status is very much in doubt. There are questions about Skattebo's efficiency and Dart's ability to throw the deep ball.
So even though all looks good, and feels good for Giants fans entering this season with head coach John Harbaugh, being ranked No. 22 -- ahead of Jayden Daniels and the Commanders and Bryce Young and the reigning NFC South-champion Carolina Panthers -- is a bit much, per Durbin.
"This is just too high for the Giants, who are benefiting from Dart's fantasy-football prowess, Skattebo's endearing style and Nabers' sparkling rookie year," Durbin wrote. "Skattebo averaged just 4.1 yards per carry during his rookie season and is coming off a gruesome ankle injury.
"Nabers didn't get to play much with Dart during his second season before suffering a torn ACL, but the reports surrounding that rehab have been dreadful."
If Nabers comes back and starts taking over games the way he did in 2024, things will be just fine for the Giants' triplets, and their offense.
But there are doubts about first-year offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Harbaugh's right-hand offensive man Greg Roman and the type of coaching Dart will get.
"There are major questions surrounding this group, especially with Matt Nagy and Greg Roman in charge of the offense in Dart's second year," Durbin wrote.
But health is the biggest question, since the Dart-Nabers-Skattebo troika barely played together. Nabers and Dart played a quarter together. Dart and Skattebo showed glimpses of great chemistry in their five games together before the running back sustained a catastrophic ankle injury in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.
So, yes the Giants triplets are ranked too high. But there is time for all that to change if the trio can stay healthy together.
