Just when you thought the Detroit Lions were turning a corner, they served up a Thanksgiving turkey of a performance. In a game that had all the makings of a statement win, the Lions instead reminded everyone why they’re, well, the Lions. They dropped a crucial NFC North clash to the Green Bay Packers, 31-24, and now their playoff hopes are looking as wobbly as a player after a big hit.
Head Coach Dan Campbell has exorcised lots of demons in Detroit, but the Thanksgiving curse seems to be one he just cannot shake. The Lions are now a dismal 1-4 on the holiday under his watch. Ouch. You’d think playing at home on a national stage would fire a team up, but apparently, the tryptophan hit the Lions’ defense a little too hard.
Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense must have thought it was Christmas morning. Love looked like a seasoned vet, not a quarterback finding his footing, throwing for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Dontayvion Wicks and Christian Watson were running through the Lions’ secondary like it was a walkthrough. Every time Detroit clawed back, Love would just heave one up and put another dagger in the hearts of the Ford Field faithful.
You have to give Jared Goff and the offense some credit. They battled. Despite losing star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown to an ankle injury early on, Goff kept them in it, finishing with 256 yards and 2 touchdowns. Jameson Williams finally showed that big-play speed, racking up 144 yards and a touchdown that had him spinning out of tackles like a video game character. But it just wasn’t enough. The offense would make a big play, and then the defense would immediately give one up. It was like watching a tragic comedy.
The game was a nail-biter until the very end, which just made the loss sting even more for Detroit. With under three minutes left, the Packers faced a fourth-and-3. Instead of playing it safe, Matt LaFleur went for the jugular. Love threw a prayer, and Dontayvion Wicks answered it with a spectacular leaping catch that sealed the deal. It was a gutsy call that paid off, and it was the kind of play that separates the contenders from the pretenders.
For the Lions, it was a day of what-ifs and head-scratching moments. They couldn’t get off the field on third down, they gave up explosive plays, and they watched their divisional rivals celebrate on their home turf. With this loss, the Lions fall to 7-5, looking up at two teams in the NFC North and finding themselves in a real dogfight for a playoff spot. The “Same Old Lions” jokes are going to be flying this week, and honestly, after that performance, they’ve earned them.
