Debating who are the NFL’s top QBs is a never-ending conversation amongst fans and experts alike . Green Bay Packers QB Jordan Love is one of the more divisive ones to rank – due to both his eye-popping talent but also his inconsistent play. ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, a former NFL quarterback, recently broke down not simply his ten best QBs in the league, but the best at various attributes that make a successful QB, pointing to one specific area where Love is among the best in the league at.
Jordan Love is known as a very talented QB who is not quite among the league’s best as of yet. Consistent play and more playoff success would propel him towards the NFL’s top tier, but for now, Love is a tricky one to rank for many fans and experts.
For ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky, breaking down QBs by specific traits is a more nuanced measurement of the league’s best signal-callers. Orlovksy ranked the top 10 QBs in each of the following seven categories: arm strength, ball placement, mechanics, decision-making, pocket presence, rushing ability, and second reaction.
Love did not rank in the top 10 in any of the seven categories except for arm strength, where he ranked 10th. Orlovsky explained his ranking by defining arm talent.
“having the ability to rely solely on the arm. By that, I mean throwing darts from what I call “funny body positions” — off-platform and contorted bases. These are all-or-nothing throws without the benefit of loading up.”
Orlovsky pointed to Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes as the two best in the league at this, but included Love at #10 due to the amount of such plays throughout the season.
Jordan Love has recently spoken on his areas of focus for this upcoming season with ESPN’s Kevin Clark. In terms of what categories Love’s answer can be applied to, it would mainly be ball placement and mechanics.
Love expressed that some of his inconsistencies, specifically with accuracy, can be solved by more sound mechanics. Footwork-wise, Love has said that a goal he has for himself is to be the best version of himself on every play, starting with his feet.
“I think a big focus for me is just the consistency, trying to be the best player I can be every play.”
A focus on footwork should help improve Love’s accuracy, something he felt was part of the reason the Packers led the NFL in drops last year. While part of it is of course on the receiver, Love took responsibility for it as well.
Love has a lot to prove in this upcoming season, and it appears that there is a consensus on how the Packers QB can take the next step in his game. Doing the little things right every time is what will allow him to use his special talent on a consistent basis.
