It has been a few days since the Green Bay Packers sent two future first round picks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Micah Parsons, widely considered to be one of the best players in the entire NFL. Even though the season starts in a week, and despite the fact that Parsons did not participate in any preseason games or training camp, the Packers expect him to be on the field in Week One.
This all being said, the NFL world is still in a state of shock that Green Bay was able to, or even willing, to pull of the trade. After all, the Packers historically are very protective of their own draft picks, and sending two first round selections in the trade was a shock to many, even though they were most certainly required to get the deal done.
But aside from what people are saying about Green Bay, there is a great deal of criticism being levied against the Cowboys and their owner/general manager, Jerry Jones.
Up until the moment he was traded, there were many who believed that there was no chance that the Cowboys would actually trade their superstar defender. After all, they had the chance to move him ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft and chose not to do so. With a week before the start of the season, too, many believed that Dallas was motivated to get a deal done with him themselves.
But even though they did extend a contract extension offer to Parsons, he declined to sign it, having become bitter over how Jones and the front office approached their negotiations. As a result, Dallas was forced to trade the three-time All-Pro to Green Bay, who gave him a four-year $188 million contract extension.
It was truly a botched situation by Jones and the Cowboys, and their former head coach, Jason Garrett, had few good things to say about them in the wake of the trade.
“I was shocked,” Garrett said on Friday’s PFT Live. “You know, the most important player on a football team is the quarterback. The second most important player on a football team is the guy who can negatively affect the quarterback. And those guys are hard to come by, and ever since that guy has come into the league, he has been a dominant player.
“And you and I have talked about this a lot, Mike — he’s transformative. He changes the whole team. If you think about the Cowboys in 2020, they were 6-10, they weren’t a very good team, and then he gets there along with defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, and all of a sudden, they’re a different team. And if you look at all those interceptions that their DBs were making, [DaRon] Bland and [Trevon] Diggs and you’re intercepting them and running back for touchdowns . . . look what’s going on around the quarterback on those throws.
“Micah Parsons is the guy causing all the problems, and those guys are hard to come by. If you think about, you know, four years, 52 sacks, he and Reggie White, being used in the same sentences. He’s an impactful player, and I was shocked that they let him out of the building.”
The entire league is shocked that Dallas allowed Parsons to leave, especially when they could have gotten an even bigger haul for him earlier in the offseason instead of waiting until a week before the season started.
Hopefully it is a mistake that will prove to benefit the Packers in championship-winning ways.
