Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love Admits He Was 'Surprised' at Offseason Acquisitions to Give Him More Weapons

Prior to the the 2025 NFL Draft, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was asked who or what position he thought the team would pick in the first round. Laughing, he said that, based on their past drafts, he was fairly confident that a defensive player would be taken first by the Packers, especially since they used their 2024 first round pick on an offensive lineman (Jordan Morgan).

One can hardly blame Love for making this his educated guess. Prior to selecting Morgan in 2024, Green Bay had used their first round pick on a defensive player in five of the six NFL Drafts up to that under general manager Brian Gutekunst. The only time they did not was when they selected Love himself in 2020.

The Green Bay Packers Used Their First Three Picks in the 2025 NFL Draft on Offense

As it turns out, Love, and just about any Packers fan who was asked who the team would take with their first round pick, was wrong. For the first time since 2002, Green Bay used their first round pick on a wide receiver, selecting Matthew Golden out of Texas.

And they did not stop there.

Despite having selected Morgan in the first round in 2024, the Packers selected another offensive tackle, Anthony Belton, with their second round pick. Then, in the third round, they added another wide receiver, Savion Williams out of TCU.

Golden and Williams join a group of wide receivers in Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Romeo Doubs (Christian Watson is still recovering from a torn ACL) that are expected to be among the NFL’s best group of pass catchers in 2025.

That is, of course, if they can erase the numerous dropped passes that plagued them all season last year.

During a recent interview with NFL Network, Love was asked about his reaction to the Packers taking offensive players, especially wide receivers, with their first three picks in the NFL Draft, especially with the selection of Golden in the first round.

“I was definitely surprised, going into that first round, having the draft here in Green Bay, and hearing for the first time since 2000-and-whatever getting a receiver,” Love said, via Pro Football Talk. “So I was excited getting Matthew Golden, then Savion, those are two guys that I think are going to add some dynamic weapons to our passing game. We’ve got a lot of weapons.”

With Golden and Williams, as well as Reed, Doubs, and Wicks, Green Bay almost certainly has their top five wide receivers set.

Now, one of the biggest questions of training camp is who will emerge to capture the sixth (and maybe seventh) wide receiver spot on the roster.
