The Green Bay Packers have one of the most unique ownership structures in all of sports. They do not have a traditional owner but instead have a president who runs the team. Mark Murphy has been the president and CEO of the team since 2007, but is now retiring. His tenure has been largely successful, with the team going 186-104-2 under his leadership. However, this does not mean he doesn’t have any regrets about his time in Green Bay. In a recent post on the team website, Murphy shared his biggest regret.
Mark Murphy: “While we enjoyed consistent success on the field during my tenure, I regret that we only made one Super Bowl appearance. I would have loved to win a Super Bowl with Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur. We were close many times, and I am confident that they will break… https://t.co/PgR4Hj5SQR

The Green Bay Packers did win one Super Bowl during Mark Murphy’s tenure, but that was it. Despite having Aaron Rodgers in his prime for over a decade, the team couldn’t get back to another Super Bowl. Murphy expressed disappointment for GM Brian Gutekunst and head coach Matt LaFleur, who have had regular-season success but limited playoff success so far.
“While we enjoyed consistent success on the field during my tenure, I regret that we only made one Super Bowl appearance. I would have loved to win a Super Bowl with Brian Gutekunst and Matt LaFleur. We were close many times, and I am confident that they will break through and win a Super Bowl in the not-too-distant future.”
The Green Bay Packers have had chances under LaFleur. They had back-to-back MVP seasons from Rodgers in 2020 and 2021, but were bounced from the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion. Murphy expressed he truly believes in them, and the direction of the franchise has been positive in the post-Rodgers era.
It’s hard to sustain success in the NFL. The league is set up for parity. However, the Green Bay Packers have been able to sustain success for a long time thanks to strong leadership. Murphy, along with many other front office people, has built an infrastructure that breeds success. Can the team break through in the next few years with this young core?
