Despite their embarrassing 13-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, there is no question that the Green Bay Packers have a Super Bowl-caliber defense this season. Through three games, they have the best scoring defense in the NFL, holding opponents to just 14.7 points per game. It is still early, of course, but it is clear this Packers defense is going to be among the best in the NFL this year.
A big reason why Green Bay’s defense has taken such a massive stride forward this year is the addition of four-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Micah Parsons, who was traded to the Packers by the Dallas Cowboys shortly before the season began.
And on this upcoming Sunday, Parsons will return to Dallas as Green Bay takes on the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
But he should not expect a warm welcome from his former team.
Parsons was traded to the Packers after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones refused to negotiate a contract extension with the three-time All-Pro’s agent. The deal ended Parsons’ four-year run in Dallas, a tenure that saw him win the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Award and become just the second player in NFL history with 12+ sacks in each of his first four seasons.
Reggie White was the first.
And when he returns to Dallas for the first time as an opponent, Parsons should not expect a very big warm welcome for the Cowboys, at least not according to Jones.
“I don’t think that’s appropriate this way,” Jones said. “Emmitt (Smith coming back) was a different story. But that’s not to diminish Micah. I think Micah’s got enough welcome out there. We just need to show we’ve got antidotes for that.”
In other words, there will be no video montage or big announcement for Parsons from the Cowboys. And perhaps that is the way it should be as he only played there for four years.
But the fans may feel differently as very few wanted to see him traded in the first place.
